Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking

Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking is a classic, active outdoor adventure in Bali, Indonesia, where you hike up a live volcano on foot under the cover of darkness to stand at the absolute summit for sunrise.

Unlike the jeep tour which parks at a lower ridge, the trekking tour requires you to physically climb all the way to the top crater—reaching 1,717 meters above sea level—for a complete 360-degree panoramic view of the island.

Key Details of the Hike

  • The Physical Challenge: The trek takes about 1.5 to 2 hours of continuous uphill walking to reach the peak. The trail transitions from dusty dirt paths through volcanic forests to steep, slippery gravel and loose volcanic ash near the top.

  • The High Summit Views: Standing at the very highest crater gives you a vantage point above the clouds. You look directly across at the massive silhouette of Mount Agung, Mount Abang, and the glowing crescent of Lake Batur down below.

  • Volcanic Steam Breakfast: Once at the top, local guides prepare a unique breakfast using the volcano's natural heat. They cook eggs and bananas right inside cracks in the rock where volcanic steam vents out.

  • Crater Rim Exploration: After watching the sunrise, you usually hike along the narrow, dramatic edge of the crater rim to see the depth of the active volcanic caldera and meet the wild monkeys that inhabit the summit.

Important Logistics

  • Earlier Wake-Up Call: Because you need time to hike up before the sun rises, the schedule is even earlier than the jeep tour. Pick-up from Ubud is around 2:15 AM to 2:30 AM, aiming to start walking from the base by 3:30 AM.

  • What to Pack: Sturdy running shoes or hiking boots are mandatory due to the loose rocks. You will definitely want a warm sweater or jacket (it is very cold and windy at the peak while waiting for the sun), a headlamp or flashlight (usually provided by your guide), and water.

πŸ•’ The Full Itinerary

    • 02:15 AM – 02:30 AM: Hotel Pick-up Your private driver picks you up directly from your accommodation in Ubud. You can sleep in the car during the roughly 1-hour drive northeast to the Kintamani region.

    • 03:30 AM: Arrival at the Base Camp & Safety Briefing You arrive at the starting point at the foot of Mount Batur. Here, you will meet your local professional trekking guide. You'll be given a safety briefing, a bottle of water, and a flashlight or headlamp for the dark trail.

    • 03:45 AM: The Hike Begins You start walking under the stars. The first section of the trail is relatively flat, cutting through local farms and volcanic forests, allowing you to warm up your muscles.

    • 04:30 AM: The Steep Climb The trail becomes noticeably steeper as you leave the treeline behind. The terrain shifts to loose volcanic gravel and ash. Your guide will pace the group and schedule quick breaks to drink water and catch your breath.

    • 05:45 AM: Reaching the Summit Crater (1,717 meters) You arrive at the absolute peak of Mount Batur just as the sky begins to shift from black to deep purple and blue. Your guide will find a great spot for you to sit down and rest.

    • 06:00 AM: Volcanic Breakfast & Sunrise The sun begins to rise over the horizon, illuminating a sea of clouds, Lake Batur, and the massive peak of neighboring Mount Agung. While you watch, your guide cooks a unique breakfast—eggs and bananas steamed using the volcano's natural, hot steam vents—served with hot Balinese coffee or tea.

    • 07:00 AM: Exploring the Crater Rim After breakfast, you walk along the dramatic edge of the main crater to look down into the volcanic caldera, see the deep vents, and take photos with the wild monkeys that gather at the top.

    • 07:30 AM: Descent Down the Mountain You begin hiking back down. Going down takes about 1.5 hours, and you will finally be able to see the incredible volcanic landscapes and old lava flows that were completely hidden in the dark on your way up.

    • 09:00 AM: Return to Base Camp & Departure You arrive back at the vehicle. Many tours include a stop on the way back at a local coffee plantation to sample traditional Balinese coffees and teas, or a stop at a Kintamani natural hot spring to soothe your muscles (optional).

    • 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM: Drop-off in Ubud You arrive back at your Ubud accommodation just in time for lunch and a well-deserved afternoon nap.

πŸŽ’ Quick Checklist: What to Bring

    • Shoes: Sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes with good grip (the gravel is very slippery). Do not wear flat sandals.

    • Clothing: Dress in layers. It is sweaty while hiking up, but very cold and windy while waiting for the sun at the peak. Bring a lightweight warm jacket or sweater.

    • Small Backpack: To hold your camera, water, and jacket while leaving your hands free to climb.
